Vertical machining centers (VMCs) are one of the options when purchasing CNC equipment. But is it really the best choice for you?
To answer this question, we cannot look at the VMC in isolation, but need to place it within the larger family of CNC machine tools and compare its machining range.
VMCs and CNC Lathes
VMC (Vertical Machining Center): The spindle is vertical, and the worktable is horizontal. Like a precision "engraving machine," it performs machining from top to bottom.
CNC Lathe: The workpiece rotates, and the tool moves. Designed specifically for machining rotating bodies.
VMC has a wider machining range: VMCs can perform various processes such as milling, drilling, and tapping, while lathes primarily focus on turning external diameters, internal holes, and threads. It also offers greater flexibility: For irregularly shaped parts (such as molds and sheet metal), VMCs have a greater advantage through tool movement and workpiece fixation.
CNC Lathe: If your products are rotating parts such as shafts, discs, and threads, then a CNC lathe is undoubtedly the better choice, as its machining efficiency and precision far surpass those of a VMC.
If you mainly machine sheet metal, molds, and housing parts, and most processes are concentrated on one surface, then a VMC is your best choice for both economy and efficiency.
If you mainly machine rotating parts such as shafts, bars, and threads, then you need a CNC lathe.
If your primary machining operations involve complex curved surfaces, irregularly shaped parts, and aerospace components, then you should consider a more powerful 5-axis machining center.
There is no absolute "better" between VMC and CNC lathes, only "more suitable." SGSK recommends making your decision based on your core needs!
